Three employees at a Delaware elementary school were jailed after authorities claimed they harmed youngsters with special needs.
Makayla Lomax, 31, Marrisa Johnson, 26, and Morgan Donahue, 21, have all been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, according to a press statement issued by the Smyrna Police Department in early November. Lomax is also facing accusations for third-degree child abuse and offensive touching.
It is unclear whether the accused have entered pleas or hired counsel to speak on their behalf.
An inquiry that began in February revealed that personnel working in an elementary school classroom for students with special needs inside the Smyrna School District would reportedly “throw objects at the students, yell at them, and call them names,” according to the release.
According to authorities, Johnson and Donahue are suspected of providing Takis with hot sauce to a special needs pupil in late 2022, despite knowing the child’s digestive problem.
Additionally, Lomax allegedly slapped a kid in the face and doused the victim with a water bottle as a “form of discipline,” according to authorities. Authorities have not disclosed any other information about the inquiry.
Following the revelation of the charges, the Smyrna School District issued a statement on Nov. 6, stating that the district has cooperated with police throughout the investigation.
“The relevant employees have not been in the presence of our students since the district was made aware of the alleged wrongdoing,” the statement read, for example.
“Most individuals alleged to be involved no longer work for the District,” according to the report. “With regard to the remaining employees, the District will honor employee privacy rights with regard to separation of employment, and we will make our reports to the Department of Education’s Division of Licensure and Certification.”
