SSI, SSDI or retirement: Which Social Security recipient will get more dollars from the 2025 COLA increase?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays for retirement and SSDI benefits. On the contrary, the federal government provides the funds for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). As a result, workers contribute to the SSA’s Trust Fund, while the Fed provides cash to pay this supplement to low-income Americans with disabilities, the blind, and seniors 65 and older.

The SSI program is the American benefit with the least maximum amount out of the three. Keep in mind that it can pay up to $1,415 for married couples, $943 for individuals, and $472 for a dependent person.

SSI will give fewer dollars to beneficiaries after COLA

Even if the Social Security Administration grants a 2.5% COLA increase, people with higher payment amounts will benefit the most. For example, the SSI program can only provide individuals an additional $24, whereas couples can receive up to $35 after COLA.

Compare the maximum amounts for SSI:

  • Individuals on Supplemental Security Income maximum amounts: $943 in 2024 & $967 in 2025 after COLA
  • Married couples on Supplemental Security Income maximum amounts: $1,415 in 2024 & $1,450 in 2025 after COLA
  • An essential person on Supplemental Security Income maximum amounts: $472 in 2024 & $484 in 2025 after COLA

SSDI and retirement  recipients will get more dollars after COLA than SSI

While SSI benefits would be increased by up to $35, pensioners will receive an average increase of about $50. As you can see, there’s a significant difference. As a result, the bigger your payment, the more money you’ll receive from Social Security.

The average retirement cheque will be around $1,927 in December and $1,976 in January following the COLA increase. SSDI will fall somewhere between Supplemental Security Income and retirement income.

SSDI recipients can get up to $3,822, with an average payout of $1,539. When compared to the maximum amount for couples receiving SSI, there is a significant discrepancy. Since SSDI can receive an additional $38 after COLA, however it is an individual payout.
