NC police track down Walmart self-checkout thief from nearly 3 years ago, police say

Police in Aberdeen said this week they finally tracked down and arrested a suspect in a Walmart self-checkout theft from nearly 3 years ago.

The police were called to the town’s Walmart at 250 Turner St. on December 9, 2021, for the event, according to a news release from the Aberdeen Police Department on Wednesday.

According to the news release, the call to Walmart was about someone who had stolen something and “intentionally miss-scanned items.”

When the police came, they were met by Walmart security who told them that a man was “intentionally under-ringing” items at the self-checkout.

Officers said that Aberdeen police investigators then looked into the case by reading witness accounts and watching surveillance video.

A news release from the police said that they eventually confirmed that the suspect was William Matthew Branch, 35, of Rockingham.

Police say that Branch was given a warrant on January 24, 2022, for minor theft and felony getting something by lying about it.

Police said that they tried to find Branch but were not able to catch him in Moore County. Police say that Branch was caught in Richmond County on November 3 and taken into custody.

One of the judges in Richmond County set his bond at $1,500, according to the news statement.
