The police say the man killed a woman with a knife in downtown Grand Rapids last week. He has been charged with murder.
According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, Michael Rose, 60, was charged with open murder and carrying a concealed weapon as a fourth-time habitual offender in the death of Lavonia Parham. He was already in jail.
On the morning of November 6, 54-year-old Parham was stabbed along S. Division Avenue in the Heartside neighborhood.
On the day of the killing, GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said it was a family matter. News 8 heard that a man and a woman were arguing before the man repeatedly stabbed the woman and then turned the knife on himself.
Police say Rose stabbed himself several times and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He stayed in the hospital on Tuesday and was watched over by deputies from the Kent County sheriff’s office.
Online records from the Michigan Department of Corrections show that Rose was out on parole at the time of the stabbing after being found guilty of setting a fire in Kent County in November 2021.
Besides that, he was found guilty of assault with the intent to do great bodily harm less than murder in 2015 and assault with a dangerous weapon in 1997, both in Kent County.
