The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) declared in a Facebook post on Tuesday, Nov. 12, that a hiker who had been missing since Saturday, Nov. 9, for 12 hours in “frigid temperatures” in the Santa Cruz Mountains in San Mateo County, Calif., had been found.
On November 9, the woman, who has not been named, and a group of hikers were at Loma Mar, which is about 50 miles south of San Francisco.
She went on a hike by herself on Old Haul Rd. in Loma Mar around 4 p.m., but she hadn’t come back to the group by sunset. The group then went looking for her, but couldn’t find her. So they called the SMCSO.
The search began with 25 volunteers, SMCSO deputies, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter in the air. The SMCSO Emergency Services Bureau then sent out volunteers to search for and save people.
At about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 10, the crews heard the hiker responding to their shouts. She was found 500 yards down a very steep hill next to Pescadero Creek. When she was found, basic first aid was given to her. According to SMCSO, she was not hurt but was tired and “very cold.”
It took an extra hour to get her off the hill. Then, American Medical Response paramedics took her to the hospital and checked her out. She was okay, so she went back to her group.
“I’m proud of our hardworking volunteers for finding the missing hiker in very tough conditions.” In the press release, SMCSO Sheriff Christina Corpus said, “Their work saved this woman’s life.”
It’s not the first time in the last few months that our Sheriff’s deputies and volunteers have found and helped missing hikers. “Remember how dangerous hiking can be, especially at night and in places you don’t know.”
