Martin O’Malley, the Commissioner of Social Security, has issued an important announcement regarding X that may effect SSDI applicants. According to the SSA’s Commissioner, they “have driven down the Initial Disability Claims backlog for twenty-one weeks straight”.

According to SSA records, the peak number of initial disability claims was 1,269,713. However, the amount has dropped to 1,155,503. As a result, the number of claims is reduced by approximately 114,210.

Martin O’Malley boasts that their data, as of November 8, reveals that the dedicated SSA employees have been clearing more Initial Disability Claims each week than the cases they are receiving each month.

SSDI and SSI disability determination processing time

For example, to receive SSDI, you must have earned enough work credits, whereas SSI requires a low income and little to no resources. Step 2 will be when State DDS (Disability Determination Services) determines whether your medical condition qualifies.

Step 3 will occur when the field office declines or approves the SSDI or SSI claim you submitted. Then, they must issue a determination letter informing the disability benefit applicants. The SSA notes that their goal is to “process initial disability claims within approximately 7 months (215 days) by the end of fiscal year 2025.”
