After an eight-month-old child allegedly suffocated while jammed between a mattress and a couch cushion in their dreary home, her parents have been charged with her murder.

Following their arrest last Wednesday, Kiara Davis, 27, and Miguel Badillo, 24, of Columbus, Georgia, were charged with second-degree murder, second-degree child abuse, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers from the Columbus, Georgia, Police Department were called to their home on Rosemont Drive on September 27 after receiving a report of a deceased child.

Detectives found the baby unconscious inside the house. Asphyxiation was later identified as the cause of her death.

According to investigators, as Davis walked outside to see a friend, the eight-month-old daughter was put to sleep on an angled mattress on a two-seater couch.

The cops claim that no safety precautions were taken to keep the baby from rolling off and being trapped between the couch cushions and mattress. In the end, the infant became trapped and suffocated.

A CGPD investigator described the filthy conditions inside the house, which included rotten food, insects, and animal feces, at a court hearing last week.

According to WTVM, the investigator informed the judge that there were several unconstrained animals within the house.

Animal excrement was present. There were insects in every room in the house. Every part of the house was filled with rotten half-eaten food.

According to the investigator, the parents knew exactly what was going on in their household.

Howard Turner, the couple’s landlord, said he did not think Badillo and Davis were harsh and instead described them as loving parents who struggled to make ends meet.

Turner told WTVM, “I could tell they were really caring for that baby.” It resembled a strange accident.

Authorities say that the parents of the infant were arrested a few days after arrest orders were filed for them on November 8.

Both of them are presently being held at Muscogee County Jail without bond.
