The arrest of a 77-year-old man for the 1969 murder may have closed a 55-year-old cold case.

In Ponca City, Oklahoma, 77-year-old Joseph Ambroz was taken into custody for the 1969 murder of Mary Kay Heese, then 17 years old.

When Heese vanished in 1969, her family filed a missing person’s report. She got out of a car and tried to run away, but tracks discovered at the scene showed she had been caught, according to First Alert 6.

On March 25 of that year, the girl’s body was found with over a dozen knife wounds on a country road close to Wahoo, around 55 miles west of Omaha.

When Heese passed away, she was a senior in high school. She retaliated against her assailant, according to the evidence.

Hesse’s family stated that she would never have gotten into a car with a stranger, and police never found a suspect.

The girl’s body was discovered in a nearby cemetery earlier this year. Although authorities have not disclosed the specific evidence revealed during the corpse inspection, a grand jury in Saunders County reportedly found enough to bring charges against Ambroz.

According to the county sheriff’s office, Ambroz was arrested by US Marshals on November 18 and charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Hesse’s cousin Kathy Tull told First Alert 6 that she was relieved that a suspect had been identified at last.

We kept making calls to the state patrol. We called and called and called until we learned the case’s location with fresh evidence, Tull said. Additionally, when we establish our own tip line. Things really took off at that point.

Amrbroz is incarcerated in a jail in Oklahoma at the moment. He is expected to be returned to Nebraska this week to face murder charges because he has waived extradition.

This week marks the date of his initial court appearance.
