In the ongoing French mass rape trial, Dominique Pelicot’s daughter, Caroline Darian, shouted at him from the courtroom that he would die alone like a dog.
Ms. Darian, 45, used unsettling semi-naked pictures found on her father’s laptop to accuse him of drugging and mistreating her. Although he has acknowledged drugging his wife, Gisele Pelicot, for years and planning a scheme for men to rape her while she was asleep, Mr. Pelicot denies mistreating his daughter.
Mr. Pelicot spoke about his daughter on the stand on Wednesday. I wish I could look my kid in the eyes, but some others might laugh. Seeing her in this state hurts. “I wish I could see and speak with her,” he remarked.
In response, Ms. Darian said, “I will never visit you.” Never. Like a dog, you will die alone.
Everybody dies alone. Particularly you.
Ms. Darian, writing under a pen name, describes her increasing distress over the belief that she had also succumbed to her father’s perversity in her book Et j ai cess de t appeler papa.
Next month, the English version of the book, titled And I Stopped Calling You Father, will be released.
In his closing speech on Wednesday, Mr. Pelicot acknowledged that he had drugged his wife and planned a plan for men to rape her while she was asleep, saying that his actions were driven by a desire to realize a fantasy.
He told the jury, “I came to do what I did through people who voluntarily accepted what I proposed.”
In what her daughter refers to as an instance of intolerable horrors, Ms. Pelicot is the main sufferer. The attacks caused her to contract four sexually transmitted illnesses.
By sacrificing her identity to support a public trial, Ms. Pelicot hoped that her testimony might spare other women from going through what she had.
Of the 72 male suspects in the 92 alleged rapes of Ms. Pelicot that investigators have documented, 51 have been identified.
According to her, she was offered as a sacrifice on the altar of vice.
On suspicion of surreptitiously recording women’s skirts at a supermarket in Carpentras, France, Mr. Pelicot was first taken into custody in September 2020.
Hundreds of images and explicit recordings of women, including some of his own relatives, were purportedly found during a later search of his equipment.
