This Town Has Been Named The Poorest In Oregon

The most recent five-year estimates from the American Community Survey, a nationwide demographic survey that gathers social, economic, and housing data from millions of households annually, were released by the US Census Bureau in December.

The most recent statistics shows that for the five years ending in 2021, the average American household made $69,021. Even while the most recent number represents a modest 6% increase above forecasts for the five-year period ending in 2020, rising inflation has canceled out any income growth for the majority of Americans.

Inflation is still at historic highs, and Americans nationwide are feeling the pinch, especially those at the bottom of the economic spectrum who are unable to cope with rising prices, even though the consumer price index has decreased since hitting a multi-decade high of 9.1% in June 2022.

The average Oregon household makes $70,084 year, according to the most recent five-year ACS numbers, although salaries vary greatly across the state. Based on available statistics, Grand Ronde is the poorest of the 200 towns in the state. The median household income in the state is 60.8% higher than the typical Grand Ronde household’s annual income of $27,465.

It should come as no surprise that a larger than usual percentage of the population lives in poverty given the low earnings. The nationwide poverty rate is 12.1%, whereas the town’s is 33.2%.

The United States Census Bureau’s 2021 American Community Survey provided the five-year estimates used in this article. Towns are defined in this article as either census-designated statistical regions or incorporated legal entities with a population between 1,000 and 25,000.

If a town’s sampling error was judged to be too high or if the 2021 ACS did not provide median household income, the town was eliminated.
