‘Mama, Mama Help’: South Carolina Sheriff alerts neighbors about scary phone scam

Chesterfield, South Carolina When a woman from Chesterfield County answered the phone, she heard a voice that sounded like that of a child. “Help me, Mama,” the voice said.

The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office claims that the call was fraudulent and that the voice was only a recording.

The sheriff’s office said that when she answered the phone, she heard a click and then what sounded like a tape of a young boy talking.

The resident realized it was probably a scam and that it was not her child, so she hung up the phone and called the police.

Make sure your youngster is safe first if you get a call like this. The sheriff’s caution was added. If your child is with you or you know they are safe, end the contact immediately and call the sheriff’s office.

These are but a handful of the numerous phone scams that target locals. False USPS messages and phone calls advertising fictitious jury duty and court date reminders are examples of other scams.

Those who receive a similar call can call non-emergency dispatch at (843)623-6838 or the sheriff’s office at (843)623-2101.
