A pair is accused of stealing around $1 million worth of Lululemon merchandise from stores all over the United States.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Minnesota and examined by many sites, Jadion Richards, 44, and Akwele Lawes-Richards, 45, were arrested on November 14 in Minneapolis-St. Paul and charged with one count of organized retail theft.

The two were leaving a Lululemon store in Roseville, Minnesota, when a security alarm went off, prompting store employees to halt them on the day of their arrest. According to the complaint, Richards claimed that he was the victim of racial profiling by store staff.

The couple was eventually allowed to leave after reportedly denying any participation. They were then taken into custody at another Lululemon location in Woodbury, Minnesota, the complaint claims.

The lawsuit claims that since September, the couple has been charged with theft from Lululemon stores in a number of states, including Minnesota, Utah, Colorado, New York, and Connecticut.

The investigator claims that the couple engaged in a number of theft techniques, such as diverting store staff attention while one of them concealed the goods in their clothes.

Another tactic was for one of them to buy several inexpensive items while the other carried more costly items that had security sensors installed. One would remain behind and present a receipt for the products they had bought, while the other would leave with the other stolen goods after they had both left the stores simultaneously and activated the security alarms.

Authorities obtained a search order for Richards’ hotel room at the JW Marriott in Bloomington, Minnesota, after their arrest. Three of the twelve bags that the officers found when they entered the room included Lululemon items that still had their tags on them. The products were estimated to be worth over $50,000, according to the lawsuit.

“This outcome continues to underscore our ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and our investments in advanced technology, team training, and investigative capabilities to combat retail crime and hold offenders accountable,” Tristen Shields, vice-president of asset protection at Lululemon, told NBC after the couple was arrested.

Shields stated, “We are committed to carrying on with these efforts to address and prevent this industry-wide issue.”

The two are accused of stealing a total of up to $1 million worth of Lululemon merchandise. If convicted, the couple could face a maximum 15-year prison, a $35,000 fine, or both.
