When a dead baby was found in an Idaho Safe Haven Baby Box last month, an 18-year-old woman was taken into custody.
According to a Friday news release from Blackfoot police, Angel Newberry of Twin Falls, Idaho, was taken into custody on a felony charge of neglecting to notify law authorities and the coroner of a death.
Medical staff at Grove Creek Medical in Blackfoot found a dead baby inside its Safe Haven Baby Box over six weeks prior to Newberry’s arrest.
If the kid is unhurt, the box is meant to enable custodial parents to safely and quietly turn over a newborn under 30 days old without facing legal consequences.
Unfortunately, police say that neither this procedure nor Idaho law protects the placement of a dead or injured infant.
Newberry was charged with a felony and taken to the Bingham County Jail.
Boise, Idaho, is about 250 miles east of Blackfoot.
Staff at Grove Creek Medical Center responded right away to a silent alarm that goes off when the baby box is accessed, according to a statement released on October 28.
Within a minute, the medical staff reportedly took the baby out of the bassinet. When they removed it, they soon discovered that the baby had died long before it had been put in the baby box.
The event was characterized by Safe Haven Baby Boxes as a fatal and unlawful abandonment. Only when a baby is safely turned in, fully unhurt, is anonymity allowed.
The group claims that the infant was wrapped in a blanket with the placenta still attached when she was put in the box.
