Multi-vehicle San Francisco collision on southbound U.S. Hwy 101 snarls traffic

Due to a collision involving numerous vehicles that closed many southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon, CHP issued a severe traffic alert.

One overturned vehicle was involved in the injury collision, which was reported just north of Cesar Chavez St. in San Francisco just before 1:30 p.m. According to CHP, the injuries were classified as slight to moderate.

At first, the #2-4 southbound lanes were closed. To help clear the road, tow trucks were on their way, and CHP and emergency services are now on the scene. The #2 lane reopened shortly after.

All the way back to Treasure Island on the Bay Bridge, traffic was already backed up in the southbound direction.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area by taking alternate routes, such as southbound I-280, and to anticipate delays. According to CHP, all lanes reopened at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Just north of the Cesar Chavez Street off-ramp, all lanes of US-101 s/b are now open.
