A guy who reportedly caused a car crash last year that killed his niece and three nephews when he slowed down to take a picture of the Welcome to Florida sign at the state border was detained by New York authorities this month.

Marvin Redondo-Funes, 25, was charged with four counts of aggravated homicide of a child and driving with a suspended or revoked license, causing grave bodily injury, according to a Florida Highway Patrol X post on Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint, Redondo-Funes crossed the Georgia-Florida border at approximately 4 a.m. on July 1, 2023, after driving his girlfriend and four kids from New York to Florida.

Redondo-Funes allegedly reduced the speed of the vehicle to one or two miles per hour as they got closer to the state in order to get a good picture of the Welcome to Florida sign.

FHP officials claim that a car driving up behind him didn’t see that he was slowing down and crashed into the back of Redondo-Funes’ car at full speed, and into the seats of the four kids.

Despite the Redondo-Funes car’s limited capacity of three passengers, they were able to put the four kids in the backseat for the lengthy drive. The warrant states that three of the children were not wearing seatbelts.

Three of the youngsters were declared dead at the spot, and paramedics took the fourth to the hospital. The fourth child passed away two days later. It’s unclear if the child who was brought to the hospital was wearing a seatbelt, and their identities were removed from the report.

Redondo-Funes, his girlfriend, and the driver of the other car were all spared severe injuries.

The girl and two of the boys were siblings, and their families created a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for their funerals. According to the fundraiser page, their ages were 10, 12, and 14.

On November 2, Redondo-Funes was extradited to Florida after being taken into custody by police in New York. He is expected to appear in court on December 6 and is still being held at Nassau County Jail on a $270,016 bond.
