Trump Uses Tariffs to Threaten His Neighbors

(DC, Washington) Donald Trump, the incoming president, has laid out his intentions to impose tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada. On social media, Trump declared that one of his first executive orders will immediately apply a 25% tariff to all goods coming into the US from Canada and Mexico.

Trump argues that imposing such harsh economic sanctions will compel the US and its neighbors to lessen the flow of migrants and illegal substances across the country’s southern and northern borders.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reached out to Trump directly shortly after the president-elect revealed his plans for universal tariffs.

Although Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged that her nation may implement sanctions in response to US-imposed tariffs, she cautioned that the economic fallout would be catastrophic for all parties.

According to the Mexican president, General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford Motor Company facilities are the country’s top exporters to the US. Why then implement tariffs that endanger them?

Her worries were echoed by a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia. Max Cameron claims that the bulk of daily trade volume in North America is accounted for by multinational corporations having operations in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

But one educated Canadian novelist who now resides in the United States thinks Trump might have a much bigger strategy.

David Frum is George W. Bush’s speechwriter and political analyst. At the moment, he works as a senior editor for The Atlantic.

Frum claims that free commerce between closely knit neighbors is a winner-take-all situation in Donald Trump’s mind.

According to Frum, Trump’s ultimate objective might be to turn North America into a trade bloc where the majority of other economies can be essentially disregarded.
