Union Square has a sad vibe this Christmas season, despite the sparkling festive lights and the festive enthusiasm in the air.
The 83-foot-tall Christmas tree, which represents the enchantment that Macy’s provides to the San Francisco shopping district every year, is at the center of it all.
Black Friday shopper Will McClanahan was enjoying the festive atmosphere with his mother and dog, Winston.
“My mom is visiting for the holidays, so we had to come to the famous Macy’s Christmas tree and come enjoy Union Square,” said McClanahan.
Even though there were fewer people shopping on Black Friday than in previous years, the celebrations are more important this year for another reason: Macy’s, the famous store that has been a fixture in Union Square for decades, is closing its flagship location.
The closure, which was announced in February of last year, may occur as early as next year as part of a larger plan to close failing establishments nationwide.
The news is difficult for many people to accept.
Because it’s such a historic site, it’s depressing. “What a wonderful location, a large space for gathering,” McClanahan said. I’m very sorry to hear it. This large tree reminds me of Macy’s.
Italian customer Gloria Polidore agreed with those remarks.
“I adore Macy’s. I’m always available. It’s where I shop a lot. And if it closes, I’m sad. Since I adore this location,” she remarked.
Even though many people are still very much affected by Macy’s leaving, some Union Square business owners are still hopeful. One of them is Lauren Ellis, who owns the Powell Street art gallery CK Contemporary.
“Seeing folks traveling to San Francisco is a great improvement for us. They are enjoying a fantastic adventure and a great time. People love visiting San Francisco, and it shows in the business we do,” she said.
The San Francisco Police Department has increased security measures to maintain safety and the festive spirit. According to the authorities, auto burglaries have decreased by almost 80 percent in the area.
“There are now more police officers in the region. This is what we’ve been doing every holiday for a number of years. Additionally, it has contributed to a reduction in the number of incidents that take place here,” a department official stated.
While Macy’s is still operating, McClanahan and his family are concentrating on creating enduring memories in Union Square.
“Undoubtedly, there are some places that are slightly riskier than others. However, this location is excellent. It’s stunning. As his dog Winston joyfully trotted after him, he remarked, “And we love it here.”
Union Square still has a strong sense of community despite the uncertainties surrounding Macy’s.
