SAN MATEO Police in San Mateo shot a guy early Saturday morning who they claim was carrying a gun and pointing it at cops. The victim is still in the hospital.
Police responded to reports of potential gunshots near North San Mateo Drive just before three in the morning.
A man was wandering close to Jefferson Court and State Street when San Mateo Police Department officers arrived. According to the police, the man pointed a revolver at them before fleeing north on Jefferson Court.
Before pursuing the perpetrator, officers moved out of the line of fire and requested additional resources to arrive at the area.
After a brief period of disarray, Burlingame Police Department detectives were able to locate the culprit around Bayswater Avenue and Myrtle Road.
According to the police, they attempted to defuse the situation by giving the suspect instructions, but he disobeyed them.
“Less-lethal rubber projectile fired at the suspect to get the suspect to drop his firearm,” according to police. However, they said it was ineffective.
Around four in the morning, according to authorities, a San Mateo police officer and a Burlingame police officer fired their guns.
According to authorities, the unidentified suspect was hit and collapsed to the ground.
Officers claimed to have discovered a loaded 45 caliber Glock pistol in the suspect’s possession when they were able to approach him.
According to the police, the suspect received first aid before being sent to the hospital, where, as of Saturday afternoon, he is stable.
The two officers were placed on administrative leave as required by protocol while the investigation into the officer-involved incident continues.
