Sharing is caring!

Because of the continued need, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley’s staff and volunteers are busier than ever.

Currently, “one in six neighbors is accessing food assistance,” stated Chief Philanthropy Officer Shobana Gubbi.

Nearly 400 local nonprofit and agency partners receive food from Second Harvest of Silicon Valley at no cost, and they assist in distributing the food to those in need in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The community provides around 90% of the money.

Indeed, it’s a pretty wealthy neighborhood. However, we also have the greatest degree of income disparity. As everyone knows, living here is very costly. “Everything is more expensive in Silicon Valley, including childcare, groceries, gas, and rent,” Gubbi remarked.

According to experts, people usually trim their food budget first when things go hard.

“Many of our clients are holding down multiple jobs often and can’t stretch their dollar far enough,” she stated.

Leaders at Second Harvest are urging anyone in the community who is able to assist in the massive effort to help people combat this problem of silence. Giving Tuesday offers a significant incentive that lasts until midnight, increasing the impact of donations.

“Any donation you make right now will be tripled thanks to a generous donation from the Reid Hoffman Foundation,” Gubbi stated. “We are very effective. We can supply enough food for two meals for every dollar donated. At the moment, $10 will go a long way toward providing 60 meals.

According to Gubbi, donations of food, cash, or time do have a significant impact.

“Our world is filled with a great deal of uncertainty. One concrete thing that each of us can do is to give back right here in our neighborhood,” she stated.
