Six people are hurt, some seriously, when a house in Jefferson City’s east end explodes.
Crews were sent to a residence in the 2400 block of St. Louis Road just before three in the morning on Saturday for a mass casualty incident, according to the Jefferson City Fire Department.
Many casualties with moderate to severe injuries were found by the time responders arrived. The last individual required lengthy extrication, and rescuers had to crawl behind layers of wreckage to get to them.
Three hours or so after the first contact, the six victims were safely recovered. Four were transferred by ambulance, and two were flown to a hospital in Columbia. Additionally, two animals were saved.
The cause of the explosion is still being looked into.
