After first presenting his death as a suicide, a 13-year-old kid from Indiana was charged with the murder of another boy.

Officers from the Greenwood Police Department responded to a complaint regarding an apparent suicide attempt on November 10 after midnight. Officers found James Davis, 13, critically wounded from a gunshot wound when they got to the address.

Davis was taken by EMS to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he was declared deceased.

Associated coverage:

Six guys, including Davis and his accused attacker, were present at the time of the shooting, according to a police investigation.

One of the boys’ parents was at home at the time, but he was sleeping somewhere else. Their parents’ identities and whether they owned the firearm that killed Davis were not made apparent in the reports. There are presently no criminal accusations against them, according to local Fox station WXIN.

Before leaving the scene of the incident, the youngsters were playing with the gun, according to preliminary findings. The suspect then reported his friend’s suicide attempt to 911. According to WXIN, the suspect shot the victim after pointing a gun at him.

If prosecuted as an adult, the anonymous 13-year-old suspect would be charged with felony homicide and criminal negligence with a deadly weapon.

He is being held at the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Facility. It’s unknown if he will be charged as an adult. The suspect’s preliminary juvenile hearing is set for November 26.

Some of the boys engaged in the shooting went to the nearby middle school, Greenwood Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Terhune informed WXIN. Students in the school district will have access to counseling and support services, he said.

Following the shooting, Monday’s athletic events were postponed and schools resumed after a two-hour delay.

“We encourage you to talk to your children about their emotions and any fears they may have,” Terhune said in a statement sent to Greenwood families.

We have to let kids know they are supported and safe. Please do not hesitate to contact our school counselors if your child needs someone to talk to.
