A 33-year-old man called S. Brewer was given two life sentences in a horrific Missouri case for the savage killing of his 27-year-old girlfriend B. Toalson and her unborn child.

This terrible event, which took place in front of Toalson’s children, ages three and four, brought to light a horrific instance of domestic abuse. Brewer will spend his sentence in a state jail after entering a guilty plea to two charges of second-degree murder.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on August 1, 2023, in response to a suspected assault with a weapon. They discovered Toalson dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

She was found to be about four months pregnant after being declared dead at the scene. Toalson was identified as the victim by family members.

Brewer was immediately recognized as the shooter by witnesses and doorbell camera footage, which showed him leaving Toalson’s house brandishing a gun not long after the event.

Unsettling information regarding the altercation that led to Toalson’s death was disclosed in a probable cause affidavit. Brewer acknowledged stealing a weapon from a shelf during a dispute with Toalson in an interview conducted after the Miranda warning.

According to Brewer, he discharged the revolver as Toalson was arguing with him, hitting her in the head and observing her fall and bleed against a wall.

Investigators found that the victim’s two young children were in the house when the shooting occurred and went with Brewer when he was arrested, which further compounded the tragedy. Additionally, Brewer led detectives to the murder weapon, which he had concealed in a nearby stream bed under a boulder.

Brewer struck a plea agreement with prosecutors and admitted guilt to two counts of second-degree murder after being initially charged with capital murder. Two counts of armed criminal activity and one count of unlawful firearm possession were dismissed as a result of this plea.

Brewer received two concurrent life sentences from Judge H. Jacobs. Brewer is not eligible for parole until he has completed at least 85% of his 30-year life term, as required by Missouri law.

Not every member of the family found closure at the sentencing. Toalson’s mother expressed her disappointment at the plea deal to the local media, saying she had hoped for either a life sentence without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

She took issue with Brewer’s behavior at the sentencing, pointing out that he showed no signs of regret or apology. These views were reinforced by Toalson’s relative, who emphasized Brewer’s seeming lack of concern and remorse for the murder.

Brewer’s history of domestic abuse, which includes charges against him in 2019 and 2021, was also highlighted by the family, who pointed to a violent pattern of behavior that led to this sad incident.

In addition to a family dealing with the murder of a loved one under the most horrifying circumstances, the case has left a community in mourning.

In an effort to stop future tragedies of this kind, local government representatives and the legal system have promised to continue treating domestic abuse with the gravity it merits.
