A Galveston County jury sentenced a man to 27 years in prison for the 2022 murder of his childhood friend

Jaron Bryce Morgan, 24, was sentenced to 27 years in prison by a Galveston County jury on November 12, 2024, for the 2022 shooting death of his boyhood friend Dvonte Sutton in Dickinson, Texas.

When Dickinson police responded to a shooting complaint on March 5, 2022, they found Sutton with a gunshot wound to his neck. Morgan, Sutton’s childhood closest friend, was instantly identified as the shooter by his girlfriend.

An eyewitness identified the things thrown into the automobile driven by Morgan and his girlfriend, McKenzie Colonna-McBrayer. The gun, hoodie, and gloves used in the shooting were recovered by K-9s.

Morgan said to authorities that the shooting was caused by emotions of disrespect and a disagreement about $40 that he thought Sutton had stolen.

Subsequent inquiry showed that the previous evening, Morgan had accused Sutton of stealing, and after a brief argument, Morgan had shot Sutton in his driveway.

Prosecutors used witnesses, including Sutton’s girlfriend and an eyewitness who located the escaping suspects, to testify throughout the trial.

Morgan’s girlfriend, Colonna-McBrayer, was found in contempt for refusing to testify. According to medical testimony, Sutton might have been kneeling when he was shot, suggesting that Morgan was standing over him when the murder took place.

The jury also found that at the time of Morgan’s murder of Sutton, he was out on bond for prior offenses such as drug possession, assault, and unauthorized firearm possession.

Morgan’s aggressive past, according to the prosecution, warranted a substantial prison term. The jury deliberated for an hour and a half before returning a sentence of 27 years.
