On Thursday, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a police officer at a supermarket store made an appearance in court.
In connection with the killing of Greensboro police officer Michael Horan at a Food Lion on Monday, 34-year-old Tarell Isaac McMillian has been charged with first-degree murder.
Authorities said Horan was killed while answering a call about a man brandishing a gun in a Food Lion supermarket.
In addition, McMillian faces other charges related to the car chase that resulted in his arrest in Duplin County, which is in the center part of the state, about 150 miles southeast of Greensboro.
There isn’t a lawyer listed in online court records who may represent McMillian. Police stated that they were not searching for any further people in the investigation.
Horan was shot at a Greensboro Food Lion just before noon while answering a call. The shooting’s circumstances are still being looked into, authorities announced Monday afternoon.
The investigation is being carried out by the state’s main law enforcement organization, the North Carolina State Bureau of Inquiry.
According to Assistant Police Chief Milford J. Harris, Horan began working for the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and was sworn in as an officer at the beginning of 2018.
Horan was employed in the patrol bureau of the department. He has served with the US Coast Guard since 2000, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He was an outstanding police officer. Harris stated during a press conference that he had a great reputation in the community and within the agency.
Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina later on Monday offered his condolences to Horan’s family and fellow law enforcement personnel, adding that the deceased officer was valiantly carrying out his duty of defending Greensboro when he was the target of an act of senseless violence. He conveyed his appreciation for Horan’s courageous and committed service.
In a statement, Food Lion stated that it is supporting the worried staff and that the store will remain closed while the authorities do their investigation.
