After reportedly strangling her daughter and biting her neck, a 42-year-old woman from Michigan was taken into custody and hurled her headfirst down a set of stairs.
According to court documents examined by Law & Crime, Jennifer Lynn Vargas was arrested earlier this month and charged with one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of first-degree child abuse. The maximum penalty for both offenses is life in prison.
According to MLive, the event happened inside Vargas’ Blair Township house on November 8, 2024, just before midnight. About 160 miles northwest of Lansing is Blair Township.
When Michigan State Police troopers reached the residence, they reportedly went up to Vargas and the victim in the driveway. After then, investigators conducted separate interviews with both people.
Police did not disclose the victim’s name or age, but they did confirm that she was Vargas’ daughter.
According to reports from the victim, Vargas assaulted her, repeatedly striking her, strangling her, and finally hurling her down a set of stairs.
According to authorities, the girl had a cut on her hand and at least one obvious bite mark. She stated that she and Vargas had battled over a knife.
The woman reported that Vargas repeatedly strangled her, forcing her to lose consciousness, in addition to her obvious injuries.
Vargas was taken into custody by emergency medical personnel, who then took him to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for medical attention.
Additional details on the alleged attack were disclosed in court documents that Traverse City NBC affiliate WPBN was able to obtain.
Authorities were purportedly informed by the woman that Vargas had physically abused her for over an hour. According to court filings, the woman said Vargas threw her headfirst down the stairs after strangling her and slamming her head into the floor.
After sliding down the steps, the victim allegedly claimed to be unconscious. The victim allegedly fled to a nearby bedroom and shut the door as Vargas turned away.
As the woman attempted to flee through a window, Vargas allegedly smashed through the locked door, restrained her on the bed, and strangled her once more. Vargas allegedly informed the woman that she would be sacrificed while she was being strangled.
Vargas is being held at the Grand Traverse County Jail pending a $250,000 bond. A judge mandated that she keep at least 500 yards away from the victim and refrain from making contact with them.
On December 2, Vargas will appear in court for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m.
