Suspected of impregnating a jailer and a jail nurse, the accused murderer claims to be the top Bloods gang member in North Carolina.

Assistant District Attorney Mary Jude Darrow stated in court on Tuesday that Darrius King Blood Tyson, 32, used his power to arrange drug smuggling and have sex at the Durham County Detention Facility, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL.

In relation to the incident, two correctional staff members were taken into custody. Although August 1 is listed as the date of offense on their warrants, it is unclear when they became pregnant and whether they gave birth to the babies.

According to a press statement from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old detention officer Jade Shanicia Lanique Robertson was arrested in September on a felony charge of sex conduct by a person having care of a victim in a governmental institution. She most recently served as a sergeant on a security squad before being immediately sacked as a correctional officer. She started working there in October 2019.

According to online court documents, L Erin Burnette, 41, a contractor and correctional nurse, was also taken into custody in connection with the crime.

Both women are scheduled to appear in court on December 3 and are released on $25,000 unsecured bonds.

In a news release, Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead said, “This behavior is not consistent with the training, policies, and procedures of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, nor is it representative of the values of the men and women of this agency.”

Daniel Meier, Tyson’s lawyer, insisted that his client is a victim.

He told the judge on Tuesday that two employees who have since been charged with felonies had sexually abused him, according to WRAL. It is a Class E felony to have sex with a detainee. A detainee cannot legally provide their consent. In certain cases, he is a victim.

Tyson will stand trial in February on accusations of murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, and burglary in the disappearance and suspected death of Shawn Burton, a 44-year-old father of six. Burton’s remains have not been found since he was last seen on March 22, 2022.

At least three individuals, including Tyson, are charged with holding and injuring Burton. Tyson illegally held and confined Burton, moving him from one place to another without his permission, according to a warrant the News & Observer was able to get. According to the warrant, which doesn’t say anything further, Burton was gravely hurt and wasn’t released by Tyson in a secure location.

Burton’s wife discussed the mystery with WRAL.

She told me that when he left the house at night, he was going to the club to advertise an upcoming event. I didn’t see him again after that.

Tyson served more than ten years in prison for a 2010 murder committed during an attempted murder in Durham when he was 18. His conviction was reversed in 2020 because prosecutors withheld exculpatory evidence, according to court filings.

Tyson was transferred from Durham County Detention Center to Central Prison in Raleigh, where he remains in detention.
