Ohio’s SeamanIn support of 2-year-old Riggs Grooms, who has been fighting soft cell sarcoma for the past eight months, North Adams High School banded together.
To help the family with medical costs, the school where Sara Dinsmore Grooms, Riggs’ mother, used to play and coach basketball held a fundraiser.
Our president, Sara Dinsmore, stated, “Knowing that we have this much support here is like a comfort blanket for us.”
During their Saturday game, the women’s basketball team from North Adams High School honored Riggs. Unrelated to Riggs, senior Tatum Grooms stressed the significance of the occasion.
It is far more significant than basketball. We’re the ones playing, but it’s for Riggs and the Grooms family, not for ourselves, Tatum said. It’s a lot of fun to be here and be able to assist in ways that might seem like a game, but it’s much more than that.
Many of the current seniors on the squad were coached by Sara in third and sixth grade. Katelynn Boerger, a senior, conveyed the team’s gratitude and resolve to stand with their former coach.
According to Boerger, it means the world to be able to support her in the same manner that she has supported us during this entire process since, as I mentioned, she stood by us the entire time.
Riggs’ medical costs will be covered by the game’s food sales, raffle baskets, and t-shirts. The Grooms family is thankful for the support of their native community, despite the fact that they have since relocated to Georgia.
This is where we both grew up and received our degrees. However, we don’t now reside here. Nonetheless, the entire program and this community’s support, even from four states away, shows what North Adams is all about.
It’s not just about athletics. According to Sara, they genuinely mean friends, family, and community, and it’s for life.
