The coroner’s office informed news outlets that the body of 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard, who fell into a Pittsburgh sinkhole, had been found, ending the search.
Searchers entered an abandoned coal pit after Pollard was reported missing on Monday. They dug and fortified the area for about two days.
On Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police declared that the focus of the operation had changed from rescue to recovery.
Trooper Steve Limani stated, “It’s just a matter of trying to find her and doing right by her family,” in an interview with KDKA.
According to KDKA, WTRF’s CBS news partner, the abandoned mine was about to collapse on Thursday.
According to Limani, their objective was to meticulously remove the soil in distinct piles as searchers searched for any hints as to Pollard’s location.
Eventually, the excavator reached the spot they thought Pollard was.
More than 100 people were said to have joined the search and recovery effort at one stage during the operation.
