Last month, a Missouri deer hunter was charged with a misdemeanor after shooting and killing a mountain lion as it went by under his tree stand.
Joseph Licklider of Desloge, Missouri, told the Iron County Sheriff’s Department on November 16 that he and his companion were in a tree stand when he shot the mountain lion, also called a cougar, according to KY3 News.
Although there isn’t a known cougar population in Missouri, a few sightings are reported annually. Only self-defense or the protection of pets or livestock may result in the death of a protected animal.
The cougar that Licklider shot was leaving the elevated stand while sporting research tags from the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission.
Following an investigation that found Licklider’s actions were unjustified, he was charged with illegally murdering protected species. In February 2025, he is expected to appear in court.
