A guy has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to hijack an aircraft from the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in October.

Augustin Ortiz, 29, was taken into custody by Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office deputies on January 12 for allegedly trying to steal a private aircraft from the airport.

On October 13, at around 9:30 a.m., a mechanic was working on an aircraft that had an engine running. Ortiz is accused of opening the door of the aircraft. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Ortiz allegedly went toward a hangar with private jets after the mechanic instructed him to leave.

He climbed inside an aircraft and switched on the ignition and a number of lights. According to sheriff’s officials, Ortiz jumped out after the mechanic called at him to do so and fled in the direction of a forested area.

Deputies used a California Highway Patrol helicopter, a police dog, and a drone to look for Ortiz, but they were unable to locate him.

According to deputies, Ortiz seemed to get into the airport by way of a construction-related fencing gap. Investigators were able to identify Ortiz thanks to community tips, and officials were able to secure an arrest warrant for him.

Ortiz was taken into custody on accusations of trespassing, taking an aircraft without permission, and entering a posted area of an airport. Later, he was set free on his own recognizance.
