Hours after a fatal overnight collision on Highway 4 in which a driver lost control of the vehicle and wound up on the train tracks, BART service in Eastern Contra Costa County was restored Thursday morning.

Authorities said that at before 3:30 a.m., an eastbound SUV driver smashed through the center divider near Bailey Road, entering the BART trackway around 100 feet south of the station. First responders declared the person inside the car dead at the site.

At first, the transit service reported that the SUV had “significant” damage to the third rail and track infrastructure and had obstructed both sets of tracks. Service between the Antioch and North Concord / Martinez stations was halted in response.
