The little things count when it comes to haircuts.
Juan Carlos Montemayor, the proprietor of Wolves and Shears Barbershop, decided to train himself on how to work with different hair textures because of this.
“I learned a lot about different hair types through YouTube and being actually just in the barbershop, like learning from older barbers and different stylists,” Montemayor stated.
However, Barber College was not the source of this education. Montemayor stated that he was in favor of a proposed rule in California that would require hairstylists to receive training for all hair types and textures.
“They simply begin with greater understanding. As a result of working with a larger range of people, they are able to develop and maintain a more diverse customer. Therefore, I find it amazing that this is becoming the norm,” he remarked.
According to Assembly Bill 2166, students enrolled in barber and cosmetology programs must take a written exam to gauge their proficiency in serving customers with a variety of hair types. The bill also increases the criminal penalties for hairstylists who break the Barbering and Cosmetology Act, which was put in place to stop clients from being discriminated against because of their hairdo.
Additionally, the new rule mandates that licensing exams cover the newly included information. According to longtime customer Eric Meyer, it’s critical to have a barber who knows his hair type.
“Having someone who kind of understands my hair type and knows how to maintain it healthy has changed my life. I’ve gotten annoyed by it in the past and would simply shave it all off. However, I’ve truly come to accept it.”
For this reason, Juan Carlos thinks the new regulation will make barbershops and salons more open and welcoming—not just through gestures, but also through appropriate training.
“The industry excites me. It just feels and seems like a win,” Carlos said.
