PALO ALTO At the age of 30, Perry, the Bay Area donkey who served as the model for the adored character in DreamWorks’ 2001 movie “Sherk,” passed away.

Palo Alto’s Barron Park Donkeys revealed Perry’s passing on Thursday in an Instagram post.

“In 1999, he reinvented himself as a movie star,” Mike Holland, one of Perry’s 30 volunteer handlers, said last summer to CBS News Bay Area. “When you’re looking at the body and the donkey in ‘Shrek,’ that’s his body or it was back in 2001, 1999.”

However, Perry’s medical expenses also began to rise as he grew older. The City of Palo Alto and the Palo Alto community then stepped up to assist with the requests.

“He was a beloved member of our community and we know many people will be touched by his passing,” the caption on Instagram stated.

The Palo Alto Humane Society oversees the Barron Park Donkey Project as a fiduciary initiative.

Plans for the memorial will be announced soon, it said.

Eddie Murphy provided the voice of Donkey in the movie.
