Bay Area sees wetter-than-usual December, in good start to water year

You’d be right if you think the Bay Area has had more rain than usual this December.

Where you live, however, does affect how much more.

The North Bay has received the most rain, according to First Alert Meteorologist Zoe Mintz.

“Over the past month, you have truly been in on the most intense downpour. For you, three inches above average,” she added.

While still noteworthy, the December rainfall hasn’t been as heavy elsewhere.

“San Francisco is well above average when it comes to our rain we picked up 4.22 inches, nearly over half an inch of average,” Mintz stated. “San Jose saw a little bit more than two inches, although not seeing nearly as much as San Francisco and the communities up over the North Bay. For this time of year, you’re still a little above average.”

According to Professor Jay Lund, vice-director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences, the water year is off to a strong start overall.

“We’re almost 130% of normal for Northern California overall. The more south you go, the drier it gets,” he remarked. As of right now, I believe we’re doing well. Nearly all of the reservoirs are much above normal.

But it can change quickly, he noted.

“This water season is still in its early stages. We still have a long way to go, but it’s moving along rather nicely,” he remarked.

It’s also difficult to forecast how the upcoming months will unfold in California, where extreme weather is becoming more common.
