Breaking: Beach Camping Banned in Another Popular Oregon Coast Town!

Brookings is now officially on the list of Oregon coast towns where camping on the beach is prohibited. This decision was made during a meeting by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission, following a public comment period where most people supported the new rule.

Currently, beach camping is already banned in several areas along the Oregon coast. This includes spots within or near Oregon state parks and cities like Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, Lincoln City, Newport, Bandon, and Gold Beach.

Certain areas in Clatsop and Tillamook counties also restrict camping. Starting December 1, Brookings will join this growing list of no-camping zones.

Even on beaches where camping is technically allowed, parking overnight is usually prohibited. This makes beach camping a challenge, especially for those who aren’t prepared to hike long distances.

For most people, this effectively limits beach camping to adventurous backpackers on the Oregon Coast Trail. However, even some of these hikers admit to camping illegally in areas where it’s not allowed.

The move to ban beach camping in Brookings stemmed from concerns about public health, safety risks, and potential harm to the marine environment.

The issue was first raised in June by the Macklyn Cove Condominium Association, which filed a petition requesting the ban. The rule change received significant public backing during the comment period held from September 1 to October 15. Of the 74 written submissions and 20 oral comments received, 93% were in favor of the ban.

The few who opposed the rule raised concerns about restricting public access and the impact on individuals experiencing homelessness. Some suggestions included creating a permit system or enforcing existing camping rules instead of an outright ban.

While the new rule is seen as a step forward for many, it underscores the ongoing challenges in balancing public access, safety, and environmental conservation along the Oregon coast.
