A Buffalo Police detective has been charged for allegedly purchasing stolen data from a notorious criminal online marketplace called Genesis Market and lying to the FBI.
The detective, identified as 34-year-old Terrance Michael Ciszek, also known as DrMonster, faces serious federal charges.
These include possession of unauthorized access devices with intent to defraud and making false statements to a U.S. government agency.
Genesis Market, according to federal authorities, is an online platform where stolen data, such as login credentials, are bought and sold.
People who access the site can purchase personal information packaged for sale using virtual currencies like Bitcoin, which is commonly used in illegal online transactions.
Between March and July 2020, Ciszek reportedly bought 11 packages from Genesis Market containing nearly 200 sets of stolen account details.
Additionally, investigators linked him to Bitcoin wallet addresses associated with UniCC, a dark web site known for selling stolen credit cards.
In a surprising twist, Ciszek allegedly recorded a video back in April 2020, explaining how he kept his identity hidden while purchasing stolen data.
In the video, he also shared details about how he used UniCC to buy stolen credit cards.

The charges against Ciszek are quite severe. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Furthermore, in April 2023, Ciszek reportedly lied to the FBI, claiming he had never purchased stolen information.
He attempted to shift blame by suggesting that his nephew might have made the illegal purchases instead.
Law enforcement officials are taking the matter very seriously, as this case involves not only the misuse of stolen data but also an attempt to deceive federal investigators.
A cybersecurity expert commented on the case, noting the broader implications for digital security and the takedown of online criminal networks like Genesis Market.
