The snowpack in the Sierra Nevada has started off well, according to California water officials, but more snow is required during the remainder of winter to keep things on track.
According to the California Department of Water Resources’ first snow survey of the year at the Phillips Station, the region is currently at 91 percent of its average. Nine inches of snow water and a 24-inch snow depth were found during the survey.
According to the DWR, California is currently at 108 percent of its early January average. According to electronic readings, there was almost 11 inches of snow water.
According to the DWR, the state was at 28 percent a year ago.
Following record-breaking summer temperatures that continued into the fall, the season has gotten off to a good start. When an atmospheric river broke several rainfall records in Northern California and a string of storms in December added to those totals, things began to shift.
More snow is required throughout the winter, according to officials, despite the amounts being close to average.
“Our water supply picture will be more complete in April, even though our snowpack looks good right now,” DWR director Karla Nemeth stated. “Extreme shifts between dry and wet conditions are continuing this winter and if the past several years are any indication, anything could happen between now and April and we need to be prepared.”
The snowpack in January of 2022 was much above normal, but the state dried out for the remainder of the winter, wiping out the early totals.
However, after two years of above-average snowfall, California’s reservoirs are in a strong position. According to the DWR, reservoirs throughout the state are at 121 perfect of average.
Shasta Lake, California’s largest reservoir, is 130 percent higher than the historical normal, while Lake Oroville, the state’s second-largest reservoir, is 126 percent higher.
From January through April, and occasionally in May, the DWR does monthly snow surveys at the Phillips Station. The following survey is planned for February 3.
