CFB player has emotional interview after great win

How significant was Cal’s football team’s victory over Stanford on Saturday? “An awful lot,” quarterback Fernando Mendoza said in his postgame interview.

After the first quarter, the Bears were behind 14-0, and going into the fourth quarter, they were 21-10. However, Mendoza gave his team the lead in the fourth quarter by throwing two touchdown passes to Jonathan Brady.

The victory was then assured when the California defense forced a turnover on downs. Mendoza and sideline reporter Morgan Uber had a tearful post-game interview.

The quarterback fought back tears as he said, “I want to give all the glory to God first and foremost.” What a remarkable return. It shows how resilient we are as a group.

I love my boys. It’s incredible. I am so pleased of all the members of this team. We have kept the Axe, are bowl-bound, and are 6-6. Forever, go Bears. Let’s go.

Uber then asked Mendoza, What s eliciting these emotions in you?

“We put a lot of effort into this,” he said. We did everything we could this summer in terms of offense. Being down in a close game, this has to be the most memorable moment of my life today.

The winning touchdown was a 22-yard pass from Mendoza to Brady. That completed a 98-yard drive. So, when Uber asked Mendoza what he d most remember about the game, his response was simple.

I ll remember going 98 yards with my boys 98 yards, he told me. But it wasn t just 98 yards. Everything led up to that long, game-winning drive.

In that moment, we told them, this is why we do the camping trips, this is why we did every Saturday walkthrough, this is why we stayed late until 9 p.m. watching film together, Mendoza told the reporter. It meant a lot to me to get 98 yards against a great defense. We ended up scoring in the clutch.
