Chief Justice Elizabeth Clement of the Michigan Supreme Court has announced her resignation from the state’s top court.
Clement stated in a message sent late Wednesday afternoon that she had informed Governor Gretchen Whitmer that she will be stepping down from the Michigan Supreme Court by April 30 at the latest.
Maintaining a proud record of independence, justice, and dedication to the rule of law has been made possible by serving as the head of our state’s highest court. In the message, Clement expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their friendship, support, and desire to find common ground in serving the people of Michigan.
In November 2017, Clement was nominated to the Michigan Supreme Court by Republican former Governor Rick Snyder. The next year, she was elected to a full term. In November 2022, Clement was unanimously elected by her peers to serve as the court’s chief justice. She was re-elected in January 2023 and again last month.
John Nevin, the court’s communication director, informed Michigan Advance he had no further information to offer, and no explanation was given for her departure.
Clement expressed particular pride in the work done by the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) team to assist the implementation of juvenile justice reforms and expand the court’s ability to gather and analyze data by linking local trial courts to a statewide system.
Above all, SCAO has emerged as a positive force in the pursuit of our common objective of a more equitable legal system, according to Clement. My strategy for the future is to keep looking for methods to unite people, use data, and improve people’s lives so that encounters with our justice system lead to stronger families and safer communities.
Whitmer will have the authority to select a replacement to complete Clement’s term, which ends at the end of 2026, once the post is open. In the following election, the individual may then run for a full term.
