On Friday, California Highway Patrol officials reported that they had arrested an Oakland man who was accused of shooting and killing his own wife nearly two years prior.
Nathanuel McCowan, 49, of Oakland, was taken into custody Thursday night by detectives from the CHP’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for the 2023 murder of his wife, Laketha McCowan, according to a Facebook post made by the CHP Golden Gate Division on Friday afternoon.
According to the article, the investigation started early on February 26, 2023, when Oakland CHP officers arrived at around 1:30 a.m. to investigate an allegation of an attack in progress on the Edwards Avenue offramp from eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland.
Officers arrived to discover a woman with a gunshot wound on the offramp’s shoulder. When paramedics arrived, they declared the woman, who was eventually identified as McCowan, dead. After taking over the investigation, CHP detectives determined that Nathanuel McCowan was the main suspect in the shooting death.
Following almost two years of inquiry, McCowan was charged by CHP detectives in collaboration with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Alameda Superior Court formally charged him on Thursday, issuing an arrest warrant the same day.
Detectives and officers from the Elk Grove Police Department, the CHP’s South Sacramento and Stockton divisions, were able to find McCowan at Sky River Casino in Elk Grove at around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday. Authorities located McCowan within the casino with the help of casino security, and they apprehended him without any problems.
After being taken to Alameda County, he was arrested and taken to Santa Rita Jail.
“I want to thank our incredible investigative team for their dedication and relentless pursuit of justice for the victim,” stated Don Goodbrand, the Head of CHP Golden Gate Division. “This arrest is a great example of the teamwork necessary between law enforcement and prosecutors to hold suspects to answer for their crimes.”
