Officers from the Hayward office of the California Highway Patrol faced criticism when they chased a motorist early Monday morning for allegedly speeding.
A gray 2020 Honda Civic was stopped by CHP officers at approximately 12:20 a.m. for allegedly speeding on northbound Interstate Highway 880, north of Hayward’s A Street, which leads into unincorporated Alameda County.
According to a CHP press statement later Monday, the driver of the Honda allegedly refused to stop and led police on a chase while a passenger allegedly shot cops at least three times.
In Oakland, authorities lost sight of the car after creating a gap out of concern for their own and the public’s safety. Later, it was discovered in the city, abandoned.
There were no injuries.
The CHP is looking into the reported incident. The Hayward office of the CHP is asking anyone with information regarding the event to call (510) 489-1500.
