In a 2000 sexual assault case involving a quadriplegic victim in her Monument Boulevard apartment, Concord police reported an arrest on Wednesday.

The suspect broke into the victim’s apartment on December 6, 2000, and violently attacked her, the Concord Police Department said in a statement released Wednesday. Detectives at the time gathered DNA evidence from the scene and added it to a national database.

According to the police, the case went years without a resolution despite several leads. Since then, the victim has died.

Michael Lamonte Evans, 50, who now resides in Los Angeles, was arrested after authorities just obtained a DNA match.

Evans was already being held in Los Angeles County on other charges when detectives acquired a warrant for him.

Evans has been accused of forceful rape by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. He is still being held in Los Angeles, according to the police, and will be extradited to face the charges. A $1 million bail has been imposed for him.

According to the police, the “support and assistance of the victim’s family and friends was extremely important in this investigation.”
