At the Climate Can’t Wait demonstration on Saturday, over 200 people showed up in Detroit.

In a pre-event press release, organizers stated that the purpose of the rally was to oppose [Trump administration] efforts to undermine health and climate regulations.

Detroit City Councilwoman Gabriela Santiago-Romero and U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) were among the attendees.

Numerous personnel from our area were among the 400 EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] workers who were recently let go. It is their responsibility to guarantee that the air we breathe is pure, the water we drink is safe, and the ground our kids play on won’t cause cancer. Brownfield and Superfund sites are being cleared of hazardous substances downstream. “Everyone in the nation is aware of what happened to Flint’s children due to lead in the pipes,” Dingell added. In order to remove lead from all American pipes and ensure that no kid or American is ever in risk again, Congress approved the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. All of the progress we have made cannot be undone. To ensure the safety of our land, air, and water for future generations, we must resist the perilous and unconstitutional erosion of our environmental safeguards.

Republican subsidies for Big Oil CEOs to grow wealthy while the rest of us get sicker have already started, according to Tlaib.

According to Tlaib, they are conveying to frontline communities nationwide, including here in Detroit, that the profits of corporate polluters come before your health. The right to breathe clean air is ours.

The American people are being let down by the President’s administration, Santiago-Romero continued. Our old infrastructure and much-needed resources to combat climate change are being taken away from us.

The Environmental Defense Fund Action, Great Lakes Business Network, Michigan Climate Action Network, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Moms Clean Air Force, and West Michigan Environmental Action Council co-hosted the event, which took place at the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation.
