Disability benefits recipients who will not get the 2025 COLA increase in 2024, Social Security confirms it

There are two kinds of disability benefits in the US. One is for employees who fit the strict definition of disability and whose condition has prevented them from working for more than a year.

You cannot get either of the two payments if you do not fulfill Social Security’s stringent definition of disability. You must accrue sufficient work credits and meet certain requirements in order to be eligible for this monthly SSDI payout.

You might still qualify for SSI benefits, though, if your impairment has kept you from earning enough work credits. This is Supplemental Security Income, which is available to both adults and children.

First Americans on disability benefits to get COLA

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), SSI claimants will get the COLA first. In reality, in 2024, their disability benefit will be adjusted to reflect the cost of living.

However, it will be paid to SSDI beneficiaries in January 2025. It is better to get your disability benefit with the COLA rise as soon as possible, even though there isn’t much of a difference.

Disability recipients and retirees will have to wait until the COLA raise arrives in their mail boxes or bank accounts, even if the Social Security Administration announces it on October 10, 2024.

Exact dates for the COLA increase if you get a disability benefit

The 2025 COLA rise will be paid to SSI beneficiaries on December 31, 2024. They will therefore be paid on January 1, 2025, which is one day ahead of the actual due date. Money is sent by the Social Security Administration the day before a federal holiday.

Remember that those SSDI beneficiaries who get their payments on the third will be the first to receive the 2025 COLA. The January 3, 2025 COLA rise is only available to those who were receiving disability payments before May 1997.

Disability benefits will be paid along with the COLA rise on January 8, 15, and 22 after this payday. The COLA rise will therefore take later for SSDI recipients whose birthdays fall between 21 and 31.
