HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) – Hamilton city leaders were advocating for a passenger rail stop within the city, as discussions about Amtrak or another company operating a service through the area continued.

The city is currently renovating its historic railroad depot, which officials hope will serve as a passenger rail station on a proposed route connecting Cincinnati and Cleveland.

During a city council meeting on Friday, Hamilton City Councilman Michael Ryan emphasized the importance of passenger rail for the community’s growth.

“[Passenger rail is] similar to the interstate system. “It’ll only get bigger,” Ryan said. “We want to make sure we are planting those seeds right now, so that in 10 years, 20 years from now, that is going to blossom into additional economic development opportunities, more jobs, more travel, tourism opportunities for our city.”

David Wormald, AECOM’s senior project engineer and project manager, briefed council members on the proposed 3C & D route from Cincinnati to Cleveland.

He stated that several questions remain unanswered, including which tracks the service will use, the frequency of service, and the location of station stops.

“If you can get a stop in Hamilton and it has a positive or at least a minimal detrimental impact on overall ridership, that’s okay,” Wormald told me.

“But if the stop in Hamilton is serving, say, 100 people a day, but then 200 people a day aren’t going to take it because it’s making their trip longer, then that’s a negative.”

Wormald advised Hamilton leaders to continue to engage with Amtrak and passenger rail advocates in order to position themselves favorably for a station stop if the opportunity arises.
