The administration of Donald Trump has placed a 90-day halt on all foreign aid, save for Egypt and Israel, according to a new State Department letter issued on Friday.
According to the memo signed by newly appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, no new foreign aid commitments will be made until Rubio completes an 85-day study and recommends a course of action to Trump, to the extent allowed by law.
The document claims that this guarantees that America’s foreign aid commitments are efficient, in line with President Trump’s foreign policy, and do not repeat.
For Egypt and Israel, the document contains an exception for foreign military funding, including wages required to manage such funding. The entrances from Gaza are guarded by these two nations.
Trump recently acknowledged that he is not sure the ceasefire deal he helped arrange would hold, opening the prospect for additional violence even though Gaza is now enjoying a break from months of nonstop bombing.
Notably, the US did not grant a waiver to Ukraine, which has benefited from hundreds of billions of dollars in aid. Trump said earlier this week that he was interested in talking about the United States and Russia denuclearizing.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, said this week that he was open to discussing ending the conflict in Ukraine with Trump. If diplomacy fails, Trump has vowed to impose sanctions.
Trump issued an executive order on Monday that for 90 days, while the nation’s pledges were examined, forbade any new foreign aid promises or payments to nations, nongovernmental groups, international organizations, and contractors.
