Donald Trump pledges to terminate government employees who refuse to return to the office

In addition to announcing Monday that he plans to dismiss any government employees who do not physically report to work when his new administration takes office, President-elect Donald Trump has promised to take legal action against a Biden-era arrangement that permits remote labor.

During a news conference at his home and private club, Mar-a-Lago, Trump threatened to fire anyone who did not return to work or the office.

He told me that someone in the Biden administration waived that for five years, meaning that workers are not required to return to the office for that time. This is absurd. We will undoubtedly move to court to prohibit it since it was akin to a gift to a union.

Earlier this month, the American Federation of Government Employees, a union representing over 40,000 workers, achieved a deal with the Social Security Administration that will permit most of those workers to continue working from home two to five days a week.

The Department of Government Efficiency, which was established by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to reduce government spending, is probably going to suggest that remote labor be banned throughout the US government. Working from home has long been condemned by Musk, who calls it immoral.

About half of the 2.3 million federal employees in the nation work exclusively in-person, with the other half being able to work remotely, according to the Office of Management and Budget. Ten percent or so are completely remote.
