Former President Donald Trump urged Wayne Gretzky to run for Prime Minister of Canada in a telegram sent on Christmas Day.

Trump claimed on Truth Social that he told Gretzky that he could easily win the national election during his conversation with the renowned hockey star and Canadian hero.

In apparent reference to his joke about the northern neighbor being the 51st state in the US, he also named Gretzky as governor of Canada.

I simply departed. On Wednesday afternoon, Trump posted on Truth Social about Wayne Gretzky, also referred to as “The Great One” in ice hockey circles. I suggested that Wayne run for Prime Minister of Canada, which would soon be known as Governor of Canada. You wouldn’t even need to run for office; you would win with ease.

Gretzky had no interest in running, Trump said.

Despite his lack of interest, the president tweeted, “I believe the Canadian people should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement.” Watching it would be a lot of fun!

A request for comment from Business Insider was not immediately answered by a Gretzky spokesperson.

Trump has declared his intention to slap 25% higher import taxes on Canadian goods during his next term as president.

Trump’s account made around 40 posts on Truth Social on Wednesday, the majority of which were stories from conservative media sites endorsing his ideas.

Additionally, he nominated Trump’s 2020 campaign adviser Kevin Marino Cabrera, a Republican politician in Florida, to be his ambassador to Panama. Trump has made threats to regain control of the Panama Canal within the past week.

Gretzky is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada. The president-elect is supporting him at a time when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may be losing his job.

Through a partnership with the New Democratic Party, Trudeau’s Liberal Party is able to hold onto power in the nation’s parliament.

The Liberals would lose their majority and a new election would be required if Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democratic Party, calls for a no confidence vote in January. In October 2025, Canada will also conduct a federal election.

Shortly after Trump won the November election, Gretzky and his family traveled to Mar-a-Lago. An Instagram picture of Gretzky wearing a white-and-gold “Make America Great Again” cap was shared by a Trump Organization executive.

According to polls, Trudeau’s Liberal Party is currently leading Canada’s Conservative Party, which Gretzky has previously backed.
