On Christmas Day, 6,000 prisoners broke out of a high-security prison in Mozambique by snatching the weapons of the guards.

After escaping through a crumbled wall, police have now called on the criminals—including 29 terrorists—to surrender.

33 inmates were killed and 15 injured in a battle with security officers during their escape, according to Police Chief Bernardino Rafael.

Maputo Central Prison, located nine miles southwest of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, was the site of the break-in.

According to Rafael, a group of protestors outside the walls caused agitation, which sparked the violence on Wednesday at noon.

A few inmates at the facility started releasing other inmates after stealing guns from the guards.

According to Rafael, demonstrators outside the prison were creating a lot of noise and calling for the ability to evacuate the inmates completing their terms before the wall collapsed.

Inmates were seen on camera yelling and pacing the jail yard.

Another video showed a man outside the prison announcing his escape while wearing handcuffs on one hand.

“These handcuffs are because I started the first fire in the maximum security prison,” the man explains.

When my friends started a revolt and freed me, I was in the disciplinary cell.

I will save the nation, but I’m taking this s*** home with me.

The riot at the prison occurred as violence broke out nationwide following the election.

Since the ruling party’s presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, was proclaimed the victor of the contentious October 9 elections by the nation’s highest court on Monday, violence has erupted throughout Mozambique.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Mozambique’s Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda said that the violence was mostly the result of youthful followers of losing candidate Venancio Mondlane, who only won 24% of the vote, behind only Chapo, who received 65%.
