BAKERSFIELD, Calif. —
No one was hurt after an F-16 fighter jet experienced brake failure while taxing Wednesday morning, hitting a boulder and the back of a vehicle at Edwards Air Force Base.
Officials said an F-16D Fighting Falcon fighter jet was assigned to the 416th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base Wednesday morning.
According to officials, at around 9 a.m., the jet was on a training mission with the Air Force Test Pilot School when it experienced brake failure and loss of directional control while taxiing.
The jet left the taxiway, crossed desert terrain, and stopped after hitting a boulder and the back of an unoccupied private vehicle parked near the Edwards air traffic control tower.
The aircrew safely evacuated the aircraft.
No one was hurt.
Officials said fuel spilled from a ruptured fuel tank, much of which evaporated in the desert heat.
The spill area has been evaluated by a bio-environmental team, and the spill area will be fully remediated.
Officials said the exact cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
